I made my first trip to Tulwei Village in Malekula shortly after the unexpected death of Flexon's dad. During that trip Flexon's brother, Alsen, shared with me how this loss had affected him. It made him realize the importance of spiritual things, and that eternity is far more important than the here-and-now. I spent a good amount of time visiting with Alsen about his life and the saving message of Jesus. During my second trip to the village, I was able to sit down and study with Alsen on several occasions. It became evident that he did indeed desire to be baptized into Christ. Since there were no Christians yet in Malekula, it was important for him to really count the cost of the decision he was considering. He would have to leave a leadership position in the Presbyterian Church, the church that his entire family was active in. He would likely have to worship by himself for awhile. He would face other cultural pressures as well because of his changed life. On Sunday afternoon, Alsen came and said that he was ready. We walked down to the river where I baptized him into Christ for the forgiveness of his sins. Please join me in praying regaularly for this new Christian, that he may be faithful and that others would follow in his footsteps of obedience. EB |
